Developing Local Food Systems
The goal of the food systems program is to increase access to locally grown produce for residents living in marginalized communities and/or food deserts. Access is provided by the following means: Mobile Farmers’ Market: The Mobile Market goes to 3 undeserved areas in the county to sell fresh produce to local residents. Food Pantry Program: “FRIENDS” Connection (Food Relief Incorporating Education, Nutrition, and Dietary Support) in partnership with America’s Second Harvest, provides community-wide food distribution to over 500 families.
Farmer’s Network-Working with small, minority landowners and producers in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi to forma a Deep South Agricultural Value Chain to increase income for low wealth minority farmers, capitalize on the increase in sitewide vegetable and fruit production, and improve, connect, and fully utilize existing infrastructure.
